I had seen earlier in the week that today was supposed to be a scorcher, so I thought we'd take a break from too long a bird walk - often it's not a great time to see birds when it's this hot outside. They're seeking shelter from dehydration and overheating as well for their own survival. A visit to Bird Alley in the museum was in order, where the KidSummer Kids sketched several birds. We have access to the exhibits before the public for about 30 minutes, so why not take advantage of that? I LOVE children's artwork. I am fascinated by it's purity and I love watching the process. Please see their bird illustrations below, one of which, I was given as a gift to keep! SO thoughtful! We also visited the Marshview Room and checked out the honey bees and the new mural in the upper level hallway. They're getting really good at identifying bird species! We also visited the Naturescape Gallery, where we admired amazing photography, as well as the spectacular swordfish mural, by James Prosek.
On our walk we visited the wildflower garden and were able to spot a few species doing their best to beat the heat. The bird of the day...a Belted Kingfisher! We only had a brief sighting, but exciting it WAS!
