4.2.15 - Bird Nerd Moment - My yard!
Yarmouth, MA

So I was in my driveway, after just getting home from work.  My friend Amy and her daughter had just pulled up for a quick spontaneous visit and right after her car stopped, I heard a sound that I didn't recognize.  It sounded like a dog squeaky toy.  Then I heard it again, but a series of them.  I said, "What is THAT?!"  I looked up to where the sound came from and saw it, her I think.  A large Cooper's Hawk about 25 feet up, perched in one of the Oak trees in our front yard.  She was RIGHT OVER OUR HEAD!  I was amazed that she would've called attention to herself!  It seemed so odd.  I was able to slowly creep inside so my daughter could catch a glimpse, the mail lady stopped and saw her and even drove away... the bird just stayed and let us admire her!  I then ran in to fetch my camera and binoculars so I could hopefully grab a photo or two - and I was able to.  You can even see her bright yellow talons and orangey red eyes.  My camera setting was off, so the branches are more in focus than the bird, but still... she was so GORGEOUS!  What a gift!  She was more than likely stalking the song birds who frequent our feeder.  Maybe that's why she couldn't fly right away... late lunch?  It was SUCH a moment, and I felt so fortunate to be able to share it with my friend and both of our daughters.  Sometimes that's enough to brighten your darkest day... a bird sighting.  They are magical in so many ways.
