This morning I got to say "Hello!" and "Welcome" to a new flock of Bird Nerds. There are some familiar faces in this group, which always makes me happy. Our introductions typically happen after the bird memory game. Its important, even in the age of technology, for bird nerds to be familiar with bird guides and different species of bird. Yes, there are apps for your phone, some rave about them. I really prefer the books. You don't always have cell reception, there are times when you run out of power. A great bird book is an excellent tool to have and they are fun to look at!
The weather this week has had us in a heat index warning, so we did head out for a quick bird walk, though there was not a lot of activity, even though it was morning. I asked the bird nerds about that. Why is it so quiet? Where are all the birds? "It's SUPER hot out here!", said one of the bird nerds. It truly was and it was not a good plan to be out on our typical length bird walk, besides, the birds were hiding from the heat. We did get some relief within the museum and as we took a few minutes to cool off, we snuck in a visit to the Marshview Room. There were not the normal amount of customers there either though. Dehydration is a true danger and the fact the birds were hiding from the heat, it was good to follow their lead.
We did get a quick tour of the Secret Trail and eventually mentioned both a bird they know, and a bird they'd like to see while we're all together. Let's see how the week goes! We had tremendous luck last week. (double click photos to enlarge)
