7.30.18 - KidSummer - Birding 101 - Cape Cod Museum of Natural History
Brewster, MA

KidSummer Day Camp is something I look forward to every summer, because when I'm working with 7-12 year old Bird Nerds, magic always happens.  I'm excited to meet them, because they have so much to offer.  They take in the world differently, not only because of their age, but also due to their size.  Kids experience life uniquely, and what a gift it is to be able to learn from them as well.  Plus, they have sharp eyes and often see things before I do.  We all win, the birds included.

Magic did happen pretty quickly.  As they were constructing their birdoculars, we went around our circle to introduce ourselves and I asked them to choose a species of bird to mention, allowing no repeats.  Soon after the American Goldfinch was mentioned, a male American Goldfinch showed up with a GLORY!  He announced his presence and continued to hang out with us, graciously long enough for me to snap a few photos.  Pretty cool!

Our bird walk was fantastic as well with several species showing up, allowing for some wonderful views in the summer heat.  The bird nerds were great!  The birds were beautiful and we have four more days together to see and hear what we'll see and hear.  My favorite quote of the morning: "Blue Jays are like the police of the forest."
I can't wait to hear more of what these bird nerds come up with as we work together. (double click photos to enlarge)

Osprey - this photo reminds me of when young artists draw birds flying in the background
of their illustrations.  I love the shape of the birds as they are soaring!

Happy Birding!
